Nishimachi Food Fair 2007 西町インターナショナルスクールでのフードフェア2007
This year's food fair was fun fun fun! The weather was perfect! The sun was shining and the keiki dancers were so excited to dance in front of their peers. Most of the keiki's were veterans to the stage, but for a few it was their first time to perform on stage after having only a few lessons. Newcomer Kindergartener Claire said, "I was so nervous!"
今年のフードフェアはとても楽しいものになりました！天気にも恵まれ太陽のもとケイキがフラを踊り、とても素敵なフラを同級生に堂々と披露することができました。ほとんどのケイキは楽しそうにパフォーマンスをステージですることができました。しかし何人かはとても緊張していました。幼稚園生のチャーリーは『僕はすっごく緊張してたよ。』と感想を一言。
The crowd was attentive, and at the end of the performance, we invited all the keiki in the audience to join us and dance "Pearly Shells." We were so happy to see so many keiki on stage; Boys, girls, brothers, sisters, and friends shared their smiles with the crowd. Big mahalo to Joe sharing his wonderful talent chanting, playing uke and singing for us at the food fair!
観客に恵まれパフォーマンスの終わるころには見ていた子ども達もステージに招待し、“Pearly Shells”を披露しました。たくさんの子ども達がステージで楽しんでいる姿をみていて本当にうれしくなります。特別参加のジョーのチャンティングやウクレレ、歌に感動をした一日でした。
Nishimachi Keiki
Well, the first session of hula at NIS has come to a close. The girls were very excited to be dancing at their own school. For the Kindergarteners (Mele Mele Class), it was their first time to try hula, and now all of them can Kaholo, Hela, Umi and Ka'o like professionals. They learned "Kaholo Hula," "Kawika," and "Pearly Shells and Hukilau," this term. They also learned a few Hawaiian Words like, "Aloha," "Mahalo," and all of their colors.
For grade 1-4 (Polu) , We brushed up on dancing TOGETHER!!! and they improved tremendously. The most popular hula they learned this term was "Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai." They can all sing the song word for word too! We talked a lot about Hawaiian Mythology and learned about Hina, Maui, Pele, and more. Please ask them about those old stories of Hawaii. Next session (for Polu class) , I would like to introduce hula implements to the girls, Pu'ili, Uli'uli, and Ipu. If you are traveling to Hawaii this winter, please buy a Keiki Implement set for your daughter. If not, I will go in February and pick up a set for all of the girls
I assigned homework for all of the girls:
Where ever you travel this holiday season---Austrailia, Guam, Thailand, New York, Arizona, Hawaii, Nagano, where ever----you have to dance hula for someone (or by yourself). It can be you, alone in the bathroom at your hotel, or on the beach, or in the onsen, but where ever you visit, please please practice your hula. When we return from holiday, I will ask the girls to Document their experience!

NIS Stage
What a great day for good food drinks and dancing! On October 14th Nishimachi International School held their annual Food Fair. There were food booths from many different countries and lots of fun activities for children and families. In the center of the Fair was a stage with Live music, Taiko Drumming, and of course HULA! It was NIS keiki hula Girls Stage Debut. The Keiki wowed the audience with a 30 minute program and as a finale invited all of their friends to join the stage for "Pearly Shells."
For some girls, it was their first time to perform in front of a crowd. For others, they are veteran hula performers, but dancing on their home territory freaked them out! This is what a few of them had to say:
Sara: My heart beat like this! (pounding on her chest)
Nanako: I was nervous but then I was ok!
Eriya: I had butterflies!
Lucy: I didn't want to dance, but I did!
Nicole: It's different dancing in front of your friends.
Lanie: I was ok.
Ella: I like going on stage. Can we do it again?
