In Hawaii, Atsuko was determined to visit this shop. And now I know why. The owner of the shop is an amazing amazing man/ drag queen/f ashion designer/ broadway star/ artist/ singer/ comedian. His personality was exciting and his heart very generous. I could get all of this from only a half and hour in his shop. While we were there, he entertained Avvie and often called us, "honey." He gave Avvie a pair of Japanese slippers and tried talking to her in Japanese. Atsuko says he and his shop are famous in Japan.

The shop is tiny tiny, and he has a limited selection of dresses, aloha shirts, tshirts and hawaiian blankets. His products are very high quality and he does not make a million of each style. His tailoring style varies from tradional comfortable mu'umu'u to fitted Audrey Hepburn-like Hawaiian print sundresses. If your interested ask me about him. He has no computer...and no web page. You have to go hunt his shop down! Good luck it's in Kalihi.

Alva's Gals

When I walked into practice, Alice had a box of pu'ilis waiting! That only meant one thing! I Ali'i! The girls worked hard and got it down over the course of 3 weeks! These ladies have improved tremendously! Every time I come back to Boise, they have improved their skills noticeably!

A few of Auntie Alva's group members traveled to Vancouver, Washington for a Hula Workshop hosted by several Kumu Hula including Robert Cazimero. Auntie Alva made all of the Kumu CrabApple Leis! (They were beautiful--like a shiney reddish brown nut-looking lei). Auntie and her friends show a dedication to hula that is to be admired. They are constantly challenging themselves to improve not only hula skills, but knowledge about the art and protocol of hula.

Sweat Shop

They accused me of running a sweat shop! The machines were sweating all right! The Hulabootie fashion designers who I am deeply endebted to are:
Marsh & Aunty Alva 2.JPGann.JPGidahohulabootie17.JPG
Aunty Alva aka ChiChi (and her posse of 5)
Ann "Pa'u Master" Grey (and her helper Suzie)
Joy Pocho Salvador (does pocho=procrastination?)

Auwana Workshop in Idaho, USA

July and August 2006 was all about HULA, HULA, HULA! Hulabootie hosted two workshops, organized by Joy Salvador:
"Pua Olena" and "E O Mai."
Aunties and young ladies danced side by side and the hula was beautiful! There was lots of giggling and smiling, and even though hula ability varied. . . we had a great time!

Keiki Workshop in Idaho

Hula touches people all over the world! In July and August 2006 we had the opportunity to share something special with the keiki in quiet Idaho! For most of the keiki it was their first time to experience hula and hawaiiana. Many mom's worried it would be too difficult for their children, but when they came to class worries dissolved and everyone relaxed and had a great time. After a 45 minute lesson kids mastered kaholo, hela, ka'o, and umi; and enjoyed telling a story with their hands. By request of families, Joy will continue Idaho Hulabootie Keiki Class twice a month on Saturday mornings! Tell your friends!
