Aunty Alva: Showing her Aloha
Every time I return to Idaho, I especially love seeing Aunty Alva. She is one of those Aunties that I can chat with for hours. She always has a funny story to tell, or animated recollections of the past that I really appreciate. She is a wonderful seamstress and has helped Hulabootie to sew many a costume for our events. I can count on her to give me good advice when I’m in need; about hula or life! I Love her energy, big heart, warm smile, easy going personality, and I also love her hula group!
We had the opportunity to do 2 workshops and a private lesson. The ladies danced with smiles on their faces. I am always so happy to dance with this group because of their positive energy! Look at the photos: can you feel their energy???
Ikaika and Molly did a private lesson together and giggled a bit when they found out they had to hold hands. They were a bit timid at first, but soon caught on to the ways of dancing with a partner.
Exceeding Expectations!
Hulabootie Idaho Workshops:
Hulabootieのワークショップ In アイダホ
Joy passed the hula torch to Tasha and Aunty Patty to continue Saturday Morning Hula at the Meridian Studio. . . And things couldn’t be better! Tasha has reconnected with her hula diva inside, and Aunty Patty’s experience and big heart draw people by the droves. Since taking over, the group is growing every week! Tasha and Aunty arrive at the studio bright and early every Saturday morning with warm smiles. (even in below zero temperatures!!)
During our holiday in Idaho, I had 4 Saturdays with the group both keiki and wahine. Keiki class was held like a usual hulabootie class with dancing, singing, smiling, stickers. At first, some keiki were a bit shy and shocked at my teaching style, but by the end of the 4 weeks were used to the routine and really shined.
The first wahine class was interesting! Ladies were nervous, kind of holding their breath and were really stiff! Were they scared of me???? Not possible! By the end of it all, everyone loosened up and danced beautifully; and I had the opportunity to make some wonderful new relationships. We danced Ku’u Hoa and polished Pua Olena. The ladies have their first gig this month! Good luck Ladies!
May Day Celebration 2007
IdahoBooties May Day Celebration 2007 Camel's Back Park, Boise, Idaho
The keiki and wahine of Idaho Hulabootie performed their hula debut in the park. The crowd gathered as the keiki hit the stage and with smiles on their faces, hands on their waste, and swaying hips they encouraged the crowd to Kaholo Hula with them and invited them to a Huki Lau. They also performed their favorite Ulupalakua which always brings a smile to their face!
The wahine joined me for Pua Olena which was a crowd pleaser and showed off the ladies graceful Hula hands that we have worked so hard on. I performed Naka Pueo which turned out to be a crowd energizer and of course made me sweat!
The keiki joined the wahine to perform Kawika, to close the show. They practiced very hard to kahea and did such a great job I got "chicken skin!"
The crowd enjoyed the show and gave me a lot of positive feedback as well as inviting us back to do the show next year! The keiki and wahine had a great time sharing their hula with everyone and the weather couldn't have been better!

Exposure is Education. Many of the kids in Idaho have little exposure to other cultures, languages and music. Joy is continuing the Hulabootie philosophy that everyone can enjoy hula regardless of age, ability. or background. We create an environment for the children that is free and informal. We learn through books, music, games and allow children to think and perform at their own pace and comfort level.
