Reira's first year dancing:
Message from Marsha:
Reira has been dancing hula for a long time. I remember she was so small then, and now, she's grown into a beautiful young girl! Reira's hula is very graceful. She practices very hard and dedicates herself to hula, Hawaiian Language and Music. She attends every practice, workshop, and event and is always requesting extra materials and books for her personal study. Of all the keiki, she has the most dedication to her art.
About 2 years ago, in class, I read the keiki a story, The Girl with too many Curls. It is about a litlte Hawaiian girl who never cuts her hair. After reading that, and telling the girls that hula dancers grow their hair out long, Reira quietly decided that she too would grow gorgeous long hair. She shed tears when her mother trimmed a bit of the ends. When we perform, many people ask me, "Who is the girl with the beautiful long hair? She is a good dancer!"
Reira not only awes the crowds at all of our events, but she awes her friends and peers. She is liked by everyone!
Reira and Avvie are very close. Avvie loves Reira like a big sister, and is always sits near her and plays with Reira after practice. Reira is a role model for Avvie, and all the keiki in our group. So many girls watch her with wide eyes, wanting to be like Reira. Reira's natural disposition is very shy and reserved, but even so, she is a leader among all of the keiki. She is always respectful of others, and is observing and processing her surroundings and adjusts to every situation. I hope for Reira to realize herself that she is so beautiful and graceful.
So many people think so!----- I want her to think so too, and show that through her smile!---- Because she has a great smile! Love you Reira!

Masayo NOW
Why do you like hula?: 私はずっと美術部でもともと絵を描いたり物を創ったりが大好きでしたが、フラを始めて 「身体で表現する」ということがとても新鮮で、スポーツをしたことがない私 でも気軽に楽しめ、とても楽しいです。 また、大江戸のようなフェスティバルに参加することで、ひとりではなく皆で 何かをする、また 作り上げる楽しさも知りました。
As I mentioned before, I like drawing and making things-- and Hula taught me that `I can express myself through my body` even though I've never done any sports. It's so fun. Plus participating on stage (like Oedo festival) , Gave me a chance to dance with other people. Getting together with others is also great.

Beleive it or not, I can't stand being alone. I feel lonly when I am alone in my room so I try to go out.
Have you ever been to Hawaii? まだ行ったことがありません!Never!
What is the first thing you want to do when you go to Hawaii?

When I started to learn Hula, I didn't know anything about Hula and Hawaii but I think it's so deep. I would like to be a better Hula dancer and learn more about Hula and Hawaii. Hulabootie people are so nice and so fun to comunicate with. I really appreciate my hula sisters, and of course. Marsha for teaching me how wonderful hula is. So I would like to continue to dance hula as much as I possibly can.
I am so proud of myself being a member of Hulabootie!
Message from Marsha:
I would like to say to Masayo, "You are genuinely a wonderful person." Masayo is always thinking of others and has a very big heart. On so many different occations, I have recieved handmade gifts from Masayo--- from cookies to cakes to soba to gyoza to jewelry! She is very creative and thoughtful of others.
Masayo is also very independent. Over the years of knowing her, I know that life has not dealt her the luckiest cards, but still she smiles and lives her life with a positive attitude and spirit. She has made a life for herself in Tokyo far from her home town (Nagoya) ,working hard to support herself.
I remember when she first tried hula (see Masayo THEN) when Kaimana came to visit. She didn't have a clue about hula steps or how to position her hands, but now, she is a beautiful dancer! When Kaimana revisited Japan, one year after Masayo had started hula he commented, "Masayo has improved so much! She has so much potential!"
Masayo is always making time for Hulabootie events. She has volunteered to dance at the Orphanage and at OGO's 3rd annual BBQ, she has danced on the street at Azabu Juban Festival, and joined OEDO festival 3 years in a row. She has also danced at several of her friends' wedding parties---she is professional wedding party dancer! Aside from performing, she also helps behind the scenes to organize events (Rinshi No Mori Festival). I can't imagine Hulabootie without her. Thank you for your dedication to Hulabootie Masayo! And keep smiling!
THIS WEEK'S BOOTIE OF THE WEEK: Sally Maeda
Name: Sally
Age: 7 years old
Hula Career: Almost two years
Color: Pink
Food: Karage
Drink: Coke
Hula: "Ulapalakua" and "AEIOU"
Why do you like hula?: Because it's fun!
How does hula make you feel? HAPPY
What do you like to do in your free time?: Read Books
What book are you reading now?: Captain Underpants
Have you ever been to Hawaii? Yes!
What do you like to do in Hawaii?: Go to Hawaiian Adventure Water Park and go to the Book Store
Is Hula difficult or easy for you?: Hula is just right for me.
Note from Marsha: When I was looking for pictures of Sally, I noticed that in every picture, her eyes were wide and looking for knowlege. I also realized in several of the pictures she was right by my side. I really didn't notice how close she positions herself to me, always waiting to learn something new.

Sally is a die hard hula girl! She has been dancing for only two years, but her hula ability exceeds her own age! She is graceful, beautiful, energetic, smart and athletic. Sally's imagination is very active. She likes to make up stories about the stickers she earns in hula class, "Marsha, see??? the girl lost her bag and the fish tried to get it. . . The girl and the fish are fighting over the bag!"
Her hula technique is nearly flawless. She extends her arms, pushes her hips and shows expression in her face. Don't be surprised if you see Sally dancing for Miss Keiki Hula in the future.
