Hula Girl Movie Review: by Mie
フラについての日本映画、ということで、上映前からとっても楽しみにしてました。
話は石炭から石油へとエネルギー革命が押し寄せ、閉山が相次いでいる東北の街でのこと。長年炭鉱夫として働いてきた人たちが次々にリストラされ、沈んだ雰囲気をハワイアンセンターの設立で何とか危機を乗り越えていこうこうとする、人々の話です。
フラダンスの露出の多い格好やその腰つきで、始めは皆に認められないながらも、少 数の少女とその先生が成長しながら、そのフラに対する真摯な姿で人々の心をつかんでいく様はその過程で何度も泣かされてしまいました。 始めの暗かった街の色彩が ハワイアンを踊る少女たちの華やかさで南国色に変わっていく様がとっても象徴的。
お勧めの映画です。まだ見てない人は是非見てくださいね！
I was looking forward to see that movie before because it is a Japanese movie about hula! The story is about a town in Tohoku. The cole mine is closing the mountain because the community is changing from coal power to oil. The people who have worked as a coal miner are down sized so the atmosphere of the town is very depressing, but people try to get over the crisis by establishing a Hawaiian center.
First everyone didn't want to Hula, because they didn't know what kind of revealing costume they would have to wear; and they thought they would have to dance twisting their waists, but the hula girls and hula teacher's were open minded and that opened people's hearts. That process made me cry many times. The movie was very symbolic. In the begining of the story the color and lighting is really dark, but as the story proceeds, the color changes into the bright colors.
I recommend this movie. If you have not seen it yet, please watch it!

雨の中、立ち見も出ている程の人気度。
どんな内容か期待度80％、裏切られる度20％でしたが、
最初からグイグイ引っ張られてあっという間の2時間でした！
フラを始めた頃の自分自身と重なり頷き、笑い、
いつのまにかレッスン風景の映像を見ながら
ガンバレ、がんばれ、と応援し、
古い固執した考えでハワイやフラを勘違いな捉え方をされている人が
存在している箇所も描かれていたり、辛いシーンもあったりで
自分の実体験と重なり薄っすら涙が目に溜まりました。
悲哀と笑い、感動の繰り返しで見ているうちにどんどん
胸が熱くなり、こみあげてくるものが止まらなかった！！
周辺からも鼻水するる音がストーリーが進むにつれ増えていく。
マーシャがレッスン時にいつも言ってくれている言葉、
それが映画の中に出てきていてレッスン時とリンクする。
助け合い、ひとつになること、笑顔を忘れないこと、
そしてひとつの舞台を作り上げたその瞬間、
ラストは圧巻でした。
フラは素晴らしい。
人に笑顔を、元気を、感動をあげられる！
作られた台本通りの映画ではなく、フラを通してまさに
出演者全員がオハナになっている。
ラストシーン、今でも目に焼きついています。
あの映画の中に「マナ」が宿っている、そんな気がします。
必見！
見終わった瞬間、拍手を送りたくなる。

I was so touched by the film `Hula Girl` Normally I don't cry (maybe you already know that about me!) But I cried many times. What the teacher in the film said, is almost the same as what Marsha says, "Smile! Don't worry even you make a mistake--- just be normal and continue dance as usual...." something like that.
When there was a scene where they had a big show, the Hula girls were so nervous, to express themselves in front of others. I understand their feeling. The movie has a good main point: about people working together, and communicating with others and also with hula teacher. This theme I can relate to my own life, and it is so understandable for me ( maybe for all of Hulabootie members!) The movie was very heartwarming...I reccomend it!
